La Rochelle/ Ile de Ré

After staying out till 5am at Le Ship I was a bit too exhausted to rent a bike to see the island of Ré, so we took the bus which unfortunately runs so infrequently that we didn't have much time on the island. But we had a nice picnic amongst flowers and donkeys wearing trousers and then I went to see the Phare des baleines "Whale Lighthouse". It was neat to see the salt fields because its the same salt that the boulanger I visited used. During our first day in La Rochelle we took a guided tour to get to know the city and its history, which I too often found myself daydreaming which you can't do when a tour is done in another language. In the end though but I did learn about how the area with the university has all been built in the last twenty years and that is why its so new, it actually used to be under water. It was also nice to have little architectural details pointed out that I would've otherwise missed, such as the amazing castle-like city hall with the mermaids on the walls and the great sins as the pillars.
