Les hamburgers
As I walked down the street to the school today I remarked that it smelled like donuts, and I was curious what wondeful French dish smelled like what all French think Americans eat every day. It turns out as I arrived at the cantine and noticed an American flag hanging that it was American food day, one of the kids' favorite because they get to drink Coke and eat hamburgers and fries. As I sat alone at a table, since none of the teachers I know were eating at the same time I was, I realized I was the only American there to even know what American food really was (and that the pork in orange cream sauce option that they called Le Michigan had nothing to do with my home state). I tried to overhear their discussions about the calorie-filled foods they were eating, wanting to dispel any stereotypes, but when I saw a French person cut their hamburger with a knife and fork I figured I would let them enjoy their American food day and think we all eat that food everyday. Its interesting realizing you are the role model for your whole diverse country, and based on what you say in your classes is how people will perceive all of the citizens of your country. I hope no matter what they will know that people are diverse with varied interests, likes, and beliefs wherever you go.
